Tokenized Equity

Tokenized equity is a blockchain token that represents ownership or economic exposure to a company's shares, held onchain and transferable peer to peer. The token may be backed by shares held in custody, by a derivative that tracks the share price, or by a direct issuance from the company itself. In accounting and corporate law the same phrase can describe equity split into divisible units, but in institutional finance and onchain markets it refers to the blockchain instrument described here.

How it works

A custodial model places real shares with a regulated custodian, and a token is issued against each share. The custodian holds the underlying asset, and the token acts as a transferable claim on it. Redemption rules determine whether and how a holder can exchange the token back for the underlying share or its cash value.

Synthetic models do not hold the share directly. A linked structure references the share price through a contract or collateral arrangement, while a swap structure uses a derivative to deliver the price exposure. Issuer-sponsored tokens are minted by the company whose equity they represent, placing the issuance on the corporate balance sheet rather than with a third-party custodian.

What the data shows

Allium tracks 11,504 tokenized equity assets, of which 5,512 are custodially share-backed, 4,051 are synthetic linked, 1,930 are synthetic swap, and 11 are issuer-sponsored (Allium data, October 19, 2026). Custodial and synthetic structures together account for nearly the entire set, while direct issuance by the referenced company remains rare.

Why it matters

For an institutional reader, the structure behind a tokenized equity determines the legal claim, the counterparty risk, and the settlement path. A custodial token carries a claim on a held share, while synthetic tokens carry exposure to a contract or counterparty rather than the share itself. Understanding these differences is central to valuation, reconciliation, and reporting, as covered in Tokenized Equities: How Onchain Stocks Work.

Frequently asked questions

Is tokenized equity the same as owning a stock?

It depends on the structure. A custodial token represents a claim on a share held by a custodian, while a synthetic token provides price exposure through a contract or derivative rather than direct share ownership.

What backs a tokenized equity token?

Backing varies by model: real shares held in custody, a derivative or collateral that tracks the share price, or a direct issuance from the company whose equity the token represents.

How many tokenized equity assets exist?

Allium tracked 11,504 tokenized equity assets on October 19, 2026, with 5,512 custodially share-backed, 4,051 synthetic linked, 1,930 synthetic swap, and 11 issuer-sponsored.
